Building a Drought-Tolerant Lawn in Coppell
Building a Drought-Tolerant Lawn in Coppell
North Texas has had more dry years than wet ones lately. Here are three changes we recommend to every customer.
1. Mow taller
Set your mower deck to 3-3.5 inches. Taller grass shades the soil, keeps roots cooler, and crowds out weeds. The most common watering mistake is not watering — it is mowing too short.
2. Deep, infrequent watering
Forget every-day 10-minute waterings. Apply 0.5 inches twice a week instead. This trains roots to grow deep where the soil stays moist longer.
3. Aerate annually
Compacted clay sheds water. Aerated soil absorbs it. One aeration per year (May or June for Bermuda) makes a measurable difference in how much water your lawn needs.
Bonus: switch to Zoysia
If you are starting from scratch, Zoysia uses 30% less water than Bermuda once established. The upfront cost is higher but the long-term water savings pay it back within 3-4 years.
