When to Aerate Your Coppell Lawn (and Why It Matters)

When to Aerate Your Coppell Lawn

North Texas clay soils compact fast. Once compacted, water and oxygen can not reach the roots, and the lawn slowly thins.

Best timing

For warm-season grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine), aerate in late spring or early summer when the grass is actively growing. May and early June are ideal. Aerating in winter does nothing because the grass can not heal the holes.

What aeration actually does

A core aerator pulls plugs of soil out of the ground every few inches. The holes let water, fertilizer, and oxygen reach the root zone. Over the next 2-3 weeks the plugs break down and the lawn fills back in thicker than before.

How often

Once a year for most Coppell lawns. If you have heavy clay or high foot traffic, twice a year (spring and fall).

DIY vs hire it out

Renting an aerator runs $80-120 for a half day, plus the labor of pushing it around your yard. Hiring it out runs $75-150 depending on lot size. For most homeowners it is not worth the back pain to DIY.
